Nestled in a remote corner, Carbonare is a wonderful vineyard of old pergolas which greets the morning sun, overlooking a steep sided valley. In the past, farmers used to harvest wood and peat from here to produce coal (in italian carbone). The old owner had us taste the Recioto (the local sweet wine) from this vineyard. The purity of this traditional wine was so inspirational that we decided to acquire it!
This plot, located halfway up the hillside with its exposure to the East, has a noticeably different microclimate compared to Foscarino. The fresh air comes down from the Val d’Alpone and its Piccole Dolomiti. The natural balance of the plants and the adjacent streams told us that water flows underneath, a precious resource in order to produce a great white wine. This is how the “Carbonare” label is born. The label represents a detail of the artwork “Bouchonnier – Corker’s shop”, showing a demonstration of the cork-cutter’s skills and practices. This drawing is taken from the ”Encyclopédie, ou Dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers” by Diderot et D’Alembert, edited in the XVIII century.
