In the vineyards of Gobelsburg, the terroir is different to what is found in the rest of the Kamptal because of an important component – tertiary gravel. These round stones, each as big as a fist, were deposited from the the ancient Danube and ancient Traisen rivers during the last Ice Age – and today they form the foundation of this wine. Also today, the gravel is covered by – depending on the vineyard – a loess layer between 0.1 – 1 meters thick.
