The winery’s story begins with the nickname “Braida,” a name acquired by Giuseppe Bologna who played “fistball”, a traditional Piedmont sport, on town and church squares. А wheelwright by profession, Giuseppe owns a large Barbera vineyard in Rocchetta Tanaro and produces wine for his own and the friend’s consumption. His son Giacomo inherits the vineyard as well as the nickname, which he gives later to the winery. In the 1980s, after an insightful trip to California, Giacomo introduces the first of a new generation of Barbera wines. Due to the new production method, based on maturation of the wine in small French barrique barrels, the wine achieves unprecedented quality, lifting it from simple acidic to world-class Barbera wine. Since the early year 2010 the winery is run by the third generation of winemakers on the “Braida” winery.
